Shelby County is located on the western side of Tennessee and has its county seat in Memphis. In the early 1800s, many immigrants settled in the area and were responsible for forming the county in 1819. There have been many theories regarding the county's naming, but the one that stands out is that it was named after Isaac Shelby, Kentucky's Governor, between 1750 and 1826.
Today, the county has a population of 929,744 according to the 2020 census, a 0.27% increase from 2010. The census report further indicates that African Americans make up 54.6% of the county's population, making it the dominant race.
